THE new Co-op food store in Aughton is getting ready to open next month. The store, on the site of the former Cockbeck Tavern pub on Town Green Lane, will officially open its doors on Thursday, August 10.

Thirteen jobs will be created when the store opens.

The official opening will be carried out by the Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayoress of West Lancashire at 10am, although the store will be trading from 7am.

Opening hours will be 7am until 11pm Monday to Saturday and from 8am until 11pm on Sunday.

The convenience store will be around 2,000 sq ft, and bosses said that will offer shoppers a wide selection of fresh and chilled products, wine and an in-store bakery.

The store will also have a cash machine and a customer car park.

Store manager Dan Lee said: “We are looking forward to being at the heart of the Aughton community, providing for all of our customer’s convenience needs with our award winning products and extensive range selection.

“Our world-class team will provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere and are always willing to go above and beyond for our customers and community.”

The Co-op has recently appointed a “community pioneer” as part of a new programme to help develop solutions to meet local need.

Co-op’s community pioneer for Aughton, Emma Day, said: “The Co-operative is a community retailer and we are committed to playing a real role in local life and embracing the area’s community spirit.

“We are also giving back to the community. Our members have an opportunity to make a difference locally simply by using their membership card when they shop with us and raise much needed funding for organisations who contribute to improving local life.”

The Co-op membership scheme will reward members and their communities for trading with the Co-op.

Members will receive a 5% reward for any purchases of Co-op own-brand products and services, with a further 1% going to local causes.

Members can choose the local cause they want to support from a list of three which changes periodically. Groups can apply for this selection period at the website causes. coop.co.uk. Applications must be received by Tuesday, August 8.
