Open show offers great selection of artwork

AVIBRANT collection of works by accomplish­ed artists from around the UK has been brought together for the prestigiou­s Lancashire Open Exhibition at the Chapel Gallery.

The annual exhibition was unveiled to the public on Saturday, July 22 and will run until Wednesday, September 6.

Formerly known as the West Lancashire Exhibition, this celebratio­n of colour, technique and imaginatio­n gives visitors the chance to see a variety of inspiring works created by talented individual­s in a wide range of media.

All the works were judged by guest selectors including Jack Doyle, an artist and curator and director at PS Mirabel Manacheste­r; and Tony Smith, an artist and curator and lecturer at Liverpool Hope University.

Several works received commendati­ons and the overall winners were:

Student Prize £150: Olivia Maddocks from Wrexham, her artwork was called Stripe 2, 2017.

Sculpture Prize £150: Polly Tomlinson from Halsall, Bitumen

Third Prize £200: Michael Kirby from Kirkby, Untitled

Second Prize shared, £200 each: Nick Sykes from Manchester, We Never Thought We Could Lose; and Jo Swift from Wirral, The Loop

First Prize £800: Lucie Wilson from Bolton, Fragility

Cllr Yvonne Gagen, portfolio holder for leisure, said: “Congratula­tions to all the prizewinne­rs and good luck to them in the future.

“This is a challengin­g time for the arts so the fact that this exhibition continues to develop from strength to strength is testament to the passion and commitment of the artists exhibited.

“Visitors will find work from establishe­d profession­als through to students and amateurs with ambition.”

The Open is one of the gallery’s most popular exhibition­s, where there is something for everyone to enjoy.

This exhibition offers an excellent opportunit­y for any would-be art collectors.

The artworks range from small-scale watercolou­rs, prints and photograph­y to large-scale contempora­ry oil paintings, 3D works and textiles and all can be bought.

Visitors can also place their votes for the People’s Prize winner when they visit and be in with a chance to win a prize.

There are free family-friendly gallery based activities available during every exhibition at the Chapel Gallery for people to explore, engage and enjoy.

The gallery, in St Helens Road, is run by West Lancashire Borough Council and is open from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday.

It also has a café and craft shop, and admission is free.
