Yellows take six points

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SOUTHPORT FC kickstarted the new league campaign with back-toback victories for the first time since 2013.

Alan Lewer’s side recorded a dominating 4-0 victory over Boston United at home on Saturday before battling it out to grab a close 2-1 win at Bradford Park.

The two victories give an indication of the progress Southport has made under Lewer and his new coaching staff throughout the summer.

Lewer had mixed feelings on his side’s performance but he was pleased Southport came away with a win and showed good attitude.

“For the first 20 minutes, I thought we looked quite poor,” said Lewer.

“But we dug ourselves back into the game and then in the second-half it was pretty much one-way traffic.

“Obviously the red card didn’t help them but for us it was an important three points away from home.

“We showed persistence in the second-half to grind the result out.

“On Saturday, we played some excellent football but we needed to grind the result out for this one.”

Despite not the best performance, Lewer emphasised his delight at another victory and he believes the players who have started the opening games have shown their desire to remain in the starting XI going forward.

“It was a fantastic result for us because anyone would take three points away from home,” said Lewer.

“It showed the character of the team because they were disappointed at half-time but ultimately got what they fought for and deserved.

“There’s a few niggles from the game but we’ve come out reasonably unscathed and these players are taking the shirts and proving they don’t want to lose them.

“I think we’re getting the midfield players further forward now too and Gareth Roberts has already got two goals.

“He’s a good player. I have 15 good players though.”

Southport are away to Leamington on Saturday.
