Big changes but we can challenge

- BY EMMA SANDERS

SKELMERSDALE United rounded off a positive pre-season campaign with a 3-0 victory over Gresley on Saturday.

Manager Alan Rogers has introduced several new signings to the squad as Skem hope to bounce back from their relegation last season.

Saturday’s victory was one of just two victories Skelmersdale have picked up this summer but Rogers was pleased with how his side performed.

“I’m happy with Saturday’s performance,” said Rogers.

“The lads are now almost there in terms of fitness and the squad really is starting to look much stronger.

“Our fitness levels have improved a lot and the players are starting to take on board what I’m trying to achieve.

“They are starting to understand where I want them to be during the games and what areas on the pitch I want them to play.”

Rogers admitted results may not come Skem’s way over night because of the numerous changes that have been made to the squad this summer.

However, the manager remains optimistic that the new additions will make an impact once the team has started to get to know each other.

“We have had to be patient with the squad-building this summer,” said Rogers.

“In the last few weeks, we have managed to bring in some players who I feel really can make a difference this season.

“I think these players will make us more of a threat, particularly the lads we have brought in to play in attack”.

Skelmersdale kick off their 2017/18 campaign at Brighouse Town on Saturday, before hosting Trafford on Tuesday evening.

Rogers added: “The aim for the season is to be up there challenging with the best.

“I am not a manager who will sit here and be happy with mediocre targets”.
