Man from Maghull faces legend on TV

MAGHULL fighter Zack Gibson will face WWE legend Rey Mysterio in a new TV series. Gibson, known as “Liverpool’s Number 1 fighter” will take on Mysterio when 5 Star Wrestling starts the new series at the Liverpool ECHO arena. The company is embarking on a nationwide arena tour next month to be broadcast live every Thursday on free-to-air channel FreeSports. The events will feature household names including Mysterio, Rob Van Dam, John Morrison and Adam “Flex” Maxted from reality TV show Love Island. Meanwhile, the best of British grappling will also be showcased, including UK standout Gibson – one of the most hated villains in wrestling today. Gibson, 26, will clash with the two-time world champion and high flying pioneer Mysterio. The masked 43-year-old is a former WWE Champion and WWE World Heavyweigh­t Champion and lit up WCW programmin­g in the 1990s. The 6ft 3in Gibson, real name Jack Rea, is a former Deyes High School pupil, who has been wrestling since the age of 16.

He gained a degree in accounting and finance at Liverpool John Moores University, before mastering the Shankly Gates submission hold.

He shone in the ITV World of Sport Wrestling relaunch last year and is a key man for the UK’s top independen­t wrestling promotions.

He said: “5 Star Wrestling are bringing the best talent from all over the globe – Rey Mysterio, John Morrison, Rob Van Dam…

“But more importantl­y you can see the one name that matters, Liverpool’s No.1 Zack Gibson, soon to be recognised as the world’s No.1 and soon to be live on FreeSports every Thursday night!”

The tour will begin at the ECHO arena on Thursday, February 1, then head to Newcastle and Sheffield.

The main event of the Liverpool show will Impact Wrestling’s John Morrison’s defence of his 5 Star Championsh­ip against ECW star Rob Van Dam.

Every event will be aired live to millions of homes on Thursdays from 7pm to 10pm on FreeSports.

Early bird tickets for all 11 events have sold out, but tiered seating priced £30 and floor tickets priced £45 are still available.

A limited number of VIP tickets, priced £150, include a VIP pre-show meet and greet, priority ringside seats and exclusive signed merchandis­e.

VIP ticket holders will also have their photo taken with Mysterio before the show. Children under 14 must be accompanie­d and seated by an adult. Live shows start at 6.30pm. Doors open at 5.30pm, with the VIP meet and greet running from 4pm to 5.30pm.
