Taking up Sporting Challenge

-

WEST Lancashire’s Sporting Challenge group has enjoyed a weekend away.

The party of people with additional needs went to Castle Head field studies centre near Grange Over Sands last weekend for the group’s second holiday event.

They had a great time and tried team challenges, low ropes, a day on Windermere including canoes and outdoor art, a bush craft and campfire night, football, and crate stack.

Activities organiser Edward McCarthy said: “The venue was fantastic.

“Our group had a brilliant time. Everyone relished the opportunity to try new outdoor challenges.

“Some of our group had never been away for a weekend before.

“The centre was brilliant and had much to offer us.

“I would like to thank the Sporting Challenge staff who came for the weekend. And I would to thank our funders who made the weekend possible.”

The holiday was funded by grants and donations from Bickerstaffe Boat Company, Hedley Foundation (£1,000), Morrison’s Foundation (£1,000), Ormskirk Rotary Club (£250), Skelton Bounty (£400), and Yorkshire Building Society (£500).

Charlton Mini Coaches, based in Burscough, took the group to the centre.

Sporting Challenge is a group set up to help some of the many people with additional needs who do not take part in any exercise activity, either because family carers are unable to do so because of their age or because they find it a struggle to go by themselves.

The group was set up in 2008 by a group of concerned parents of adults with additional needs and its aims are to give people the opportunity to participate in different sporting activities and encourage them to improve their health and wellbeing.
