Cup run goes on with victory in Vase

-

BURSCOUGH continued their run of cup form in the FA Vase on Saturday, taking the first step towards Wembley in their stride; they have now remarkably won their first game in all the cup competitions they have entered since the start of last season.

Starting without mega goal scoring centreforward Chad Whyte (who is out with a severely cut knee), the Linnets still managed to run up five goals on the day to cruise through to the next round.

Burscough took the lead after 25 minutes with Will Doherty, the player who has ‘inherited’ Whyte’s number nine shirt, finding the net.

However, Burscough were soon pegged back as the Staffordshirebased opposition equalised inside two minutes via their captain Ryan Goodwin.

One captain had struck for Alsager, and in the 36th minute it was Burscough skipper Danny Brady’s turn to register on the scoresheet and it was with the goal of the game, Brady setting off on a solo run before firing past visiting goalkeeper Rhys Bills.

Two minutes before half-time Burscough made it 3-1. An excellent team move put the ball to Terry Cummings. He set Jordan Lorde up and the former Burscough Richmond striker added to his increasing local reputation by giving his team a cushion to take into the interval.

The game was effectively won just after the hour mark, Prince Ekpolo scoring to finish another good build-up.

It was all left to Lorde to score his second of the day 14 minutes from the end to send Burscough through to the second qualifying round, where they will face the short but far from easy trip to Irlam on September 15.
