A59 crash brings end to police car chase

POLICE were chasing a stolen car shortly before it was involved in a crash on the A59 in Maghull on Friday.

The vehicle was travelling on the wrong side of the road when it was in a collision with another car yesterday, leaving two people in hospital – one with major trauma.

After running from the scene of the crash, police chased the driver on foot and arrested him a short time later.

Both lanes of the road were closed after the crash that took place at around 1.45pm. Emergency services were called to the scene as a number of vehicles could be seen across the lanes of the carriagewa­y.

A spokespers­on for Merseyside Police confirmed that officers were in pursuit of a stolen vehicle that had been spotted on Princess Way at around 12.30pm. While following the Ford Focus, it was driven at speed and on the wrong side of the road before colliding with a Fiat 500 on the dual carriagewa­y.

In a statement, the force said: “We are appealing for informatio­n after a stolen car was involved in a collision during a pursuit this afternoon (Friday, September 14).

“At around 12.30pm, a Ford Focus car believed to have been stolen came to the attention of police on Princess Way.

“A pursuit of the vehicle followed, and it was seen being driven at speed and on the wrong side of the road.

“Shortly before 1.45pm, the car was in collision with a Fiat 500 on Northway, near Maghull.

“Emergency services attended and the driver and passenger of the Fiat were taken to hospital for treatment to their injuries, which are not thought to be life-threatenin­g.

“The driver of the Ford Focus, a 27-year-old man from Liverpool, left the scene on foot and was arrested by officers on suspicion of burglary a short time later.”
