Our season is finally underway

DAVE Powell believes Skelmersdale United’s season has finally started following their first win of the season at Radcliffe Borough last weekend.

United ran out 2-0 victors thanks to second-half goals from Sean Yeldrem and Kevin Edgar, with the latter bagging his first goal for the club.

The Evo-Stik West outfit had lost to Atherton Collieries 9-1 at the start of the month but recorded consecutive goalless draws ahead of the trip to Radcliffe, who are managed by former Preston North End and Manchester City forward Jon Macken.

With Yeldrem and Edgar helping record Skelmersdale’s first victory since April, Powell was filled with praise for his players.

“I feel so proud of the lads. The way they’ve stuck at it, becoming tighter and tighter as a group, working so hard for the club to deliver results,” he said.

“It was definitely overdue. We’ve drawn the last three games - the cup game [3-3 with Trafford] we lost on penalties - but the last two we absolutely dominated.

“I’m made up for them. It’s a real platform that we can move on from but it’s really important the lads realise that.

“It’s just the start of the season, we’ve got to keep on working, carry on applying ourselves and working our way up the league.

“I’ve got every confidence we can do that with the quality of the players we’ve got and the commitment they’re showing for the club.”

Skelmersdale were in action against Droylsden in midweek until the clash was abandoned during the first-half due to a failed floodlight.

United conceded three minutes into the tie before one floodlight cut out less than five minutes later. A second pylon then followed suit and despite electricians estimating a ten minute delay to proceedings, the game was ultimately cancelled by match officials.
