SKELMERSDALE United boss Dave Powell believes referee David Croft cost his side all three points against Widnes last weekend.

United went down 1-0 to the newly-promoted Whites to lose their first game in three but Powell reckons a costly error was made with the game hanging in the balance.

“We’ve had a goal chalked off for a goalmouth scramble that was over the line.

Their lads are turning away to go to the half-way line and the referee isn’t even thinking it’s a goal!” Powell said after the match.

“Our lads have not shouted for it. We’re trying to let referees make the decision but I think the [players] have been let down by the referee on that one particular decision.

“The game was good for the referees [overall] but a decision like that changes the whole complexion of the game.

“We were already on the front-foot. If we’d have got that goal to equalise we would have went on to win the game so it’s virtually cost us three points.

“We were very much in the ascendancy, they were looking tired and we were full of energy.

“We would have went on and won the game so I’m disappointed with that.” With defeat sending Skelmersdale back to the foot of the Evo-Stik West after winning just one of their opening 11 games, Powell has called on his side to start taking their chances.

“I thought overall we controlled the vast majority of the game,” he said after the Widnes defeat.

“We restricted them to three opportunities on goal but the one they scored was of our own making.

“We can do better than that. It’s just decision making - not a big crisis.

“Second-half we battered them. We’ve got to be taking the chances that come to us. It has to end up at the back of the net at this level of football.”

United take on Frickley United in the FA Trophy this weekend.

Was it in? Skem appeared to score a perfectly good goal but it wasn’t given by the referee and (inset) Dave Powell Images by John Driscoll
