ABUNGLING burglar who defecated on a victim’s patio and was later found hiding in his own bedroom has been jailed for two years.

Robert Owen, 52, left the revolting surprise for a homeowner in Colburn Close, Burscough, after failing to break into the house on January 29.

He had gone into the back garden of the home at around 3.30am before trying to force his way through patio doors but could not enter the house and instead only managed to damage the door.

He then defecated on the patio outside the house before escaping along the canal tow path behind the house.

Owen, of la Palais Building on Liverpool Road North, was arrested 10 days later and released under investigation pending forensic results.

On May 19, he went into the victim’s house while he was in the process of moving home and stole various items including a bicycle.

Officers raided his house one months later and Owen was found hiding in his bedroom.

He faced trial on December 12, when he was found guilty of burglary and attempted burglary and jailed for a total of 48 months. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £170.

A spokesman for Lancashire police said: “This is a significant sentence for the local community.

“Clearly Robert Owen is a person who has a complete disregard for the victims of his crimes and hopefully this sentence will bring some comfort to them.

“We will continue to proactively target those people within our community who pose a risk and threat to others.”
