Dangerous junction to close after 17 crashes
A DANGEROUS junction will be permanently closed to cars from next week.
The southern section of Moss Hey Lane will no longer have access to Southport New Road, near Mere Brow, after a “higher than expected” number of crashes.
Seventeen collisions have been reported at the junction in just five years, with five of these resulting in serious injuries. The remaining 12 caused minor injuries to those involved.
The majority of collisions were the result of vehicles failing to observe the Give Way sign when crossing the A565 from Moss Hey Lane in either direction.
A report prepared by Lancashire County Council stated that of the 17 collisions, a total of eight may have been prevented if the closure had been in place.
The council’s cabinet voted in September to close the junction to traffic and bollards will be installed. Pedestrians and bicycles will still be allowed to use the junction, which leads to the Tarleton Bypass.
Roadworks carried out to enforce the closure will begin on Monday, January 7.
