Edge Hill funding to aid mental health

-

FOLLOWING the successful introduction of a student Active Wellbeing scheme last year, Edge Hill University has been granted British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) Active funding to develop the scheme further.

The University’s Student Wellbeing team is partnering with Edge Hill Sport to provide physical activity opportunities to provide support to students in relation to their mental health.

The Student Wellbeing team undertake assessments of each student’s mental wellbeing using the WarwickEdinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale, and also determine the current lifestyle of the student, in particular the level of involvement in physical activity and sport and potential adherence to the scheme.

The Student Wellbeing team then refers students to Edge Hill Sport to commence a 10-week programme of physical activity with additional support from a member of staff and volunteer “buddy” throughout the scheme.

The funding will enable the University to extend the scheme to facilitate earlier interventions for students with mental health difficulties, which research suggests is beneficial to promoting an improvement.

Edge Hill is one of 18 universities, from 53 applications, that has been successful in receiving this round of BUCS Active funding.
