Mental strength will pull us through insists Green

TERRY Green reckons the mental strength of his side will be tested during the next month after they fell to a 4-2 defeat against Ashton Athletic last weekend.

Burscough had lost just just one of their previous ten league fixtures heading into the clash and sat sixth in the HSL Premier Division table.

Despite twice coming from behind at Victoria Park during the first-half, Linnets conceded two late goals to drop to ninth ahead of this weekend’s trip to Barnoldswick Town.

Green, however, believes the postponement a week previous at Irlam had stifled his side’s progress.

“The lads just want to keep playing, massively,” he said.

“We had two great training sessions before Irlam and they’ve got one eye on the FA Vase so I thought it was a good time to be playing them, especially with the form that we’ve been in.

“But it’s back to the drawing board and we’ve just got to keep the fitness and the sharpness up.”

The former Squires Gate assistant did, however, take heart in the recent goalless draw with Congleton as his side face a big month in their season with clashes against 1874 Northwich and City of Liverpool on the horizon in the next four weeks.

Congleton are the surprise package of the HSL Premier Division after promotion last term but currently sit in third in the table following an impressive first-half to the campaign.

“They are the best team in the league for me,” Green said. “I know Brian [Pritchard] their manager very well.

“They gave us a real tough test and there was a few stern words said at half-time from me to the lads and they responded fantastically well.

“In the end we went through one-on-one and could have nicked all three points.

“It was really satisfying from a management perspective to go to a top side like Congleton and come away with a clean sheet and a point.”
