Action demanded after latest crash at junction
ROSIE Cooper MP is demanding action be taken to improve a dangerous junction a van flipped onto its side in the latest crash.
Police, fire and ambulance services were once again called to Ormskirk’s Fiveways junction when the Suzuki van crashed with a VW Polo, with two people requiring treatment from paramedics.
Just days earlier, two cars were involved in a minor collision further down County Road at its junction with Hayfield Road.
Both junctions have been accident hotspots for several years and campaigners have continually called for safety measures to be introduced.
Lancashire County Council last year reduced the speed limit along County Road from 40mph to 30mph but local councillors have said cameras are also needed.
Some residents have also proposed that a roundabout should replace the Fiveways junction.
Ms Cooper, who has previously called for improvements, said the county council must do more to prevent future accidents. The Labour MP has written to the chief executive, Angie
Ridgwell, calling for “immediate action” to improve safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
She said: “Thankfully, it is reported that there were no fatalities or serious injuries, but Lancashire County Council need to sort this junction out once and for all.
“For too long we have witnessed crash after crash, injuries and lives lost at junctions on County Road. LCC can no longer just stand by repeating reviews and consultations.
“Whatever the reason is, accidents are happening here and LCC need to reconfigure the junction layout to reduce or eliminate the problem even if that includes driver error.
“I have written to Lancashire County Council’s chief executive calling for immediate action to be taken to materially change this junction to improve the safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, who are put at risk every day.”
A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “We will look at the results of the police investigation into this incident to consider whether any action could reasonably be taken to prevent a similar incident in future.”
