Concerns at fuel price difference
CONCERNS have been raised at the disparity in prices between petrol stations in two parts of the region – as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.
Images taken on Tuesday show significant price differences at two Esso petrol stations just a few miles apart.
The Esso facility in Northway in Maghull was advertising unleaded petrol at 141.9 pence per litre, while diesel was being sold at 147.9 pence per litre.
But just over four miles away in Country Road in Ormskirk, the Esso petrol station was offering unleaded petrol for 149.9 pence per litre, with diesel at 152.9 pence a litre.
When it comes to unleaded petrol, that is an eight pence per litre difference, which at a time of soaring living costs could have a major impact on families.
If an average car fill up is around 50 litres – it would currently cost £70.95 to fill up in Maghull, while costing those using the Ormskirk station £74.95.
If a driver was to fill up their car at least once a week, it would work out a not insignificant difference of around £200 a year when using the two different sites.
The comparison comes amid news that the average UK petrol price has surpassed 148p for the first time.
According to the AA, petrol jumped to 148.02p per litre on Sunday – rising above the previous record high of 147.72p on November 21 last year.
And diesel costs have added to the misery for motorists, rising to a new record high of 151.57 pence per litre.
Luke Bosdet, the AA’s fuel price spokesperson said: “The cost of living crisis has been ratcheted up yet another notch, tightening the vice on family spending when it faces other pressures from impending domestic energy cost and tax increases.”
Meanwhile the RAC fuel spokesperson, Simon Williams, said petrol prices had hit a ‘frightening new high.’
