Looking forward to Lock & Quay Real Ale and Sausage Festival

- BY NEVILLE GRUNDY

THE Lock & Quay is holding a real ale and sausage festival on April 2 and 3. The Lock & Quay is a genuine community pub in Bootle which hosts a variety of local events. It was formerly known as the Merton, but was often referred to as the Little Merton to distinguish it from a much larger pub of the same name on nearby Stanley Road.

They are advertising more than 20 real ales, sausages (of course), live music and much more. Tickets are £3 and can be bought on Skiddle here The Lock & Quay is at 2 Irlam Road, Bootle L20 4AH, about a five-minute walk from Bootle Oriel Road station. Pub phone: 0151 538 6232, and it’s also on Facebook. By rail, it is a 33-minute journey from Southport and 57 minutes from Ormskirk (change at Sandhills).

CAMRA’s Liverpool Beer Festival took place last month and the results of the Beer of the Festival competition are: 2nd place: Brimstage Brewery Oyster Stout. 1st place, the winner: Southport Brewery Old Shrimper.

Congratulations to all winners, especially to our own local Southport Brewery.

Southport & West Lancs CAMRA said goodbye last Friday, March 11 to a stalwart and active member of the branch: Fred Harris, who has died aged 90.

The service was held in a packed Southport Crematorium at which his granddaughter and grandson, Eloise and Joseph, read an emotional poem. The mourners included family, former colleagues, and friends from CAMRA and from other areas of Fred’s very active life, and we all later convened in the Guest House, Union Street, Southport, to raise a glass to Fred’s memory.

I was always grateful to Fred, who provided me with invaluable assistance when I was editor of the local CAMRA branch magazine, Ale & Hearty.

He was especially effective in obtaining adverts and collecting the payments for them. Fred was well-liked by all who knew him and our sympathies go out to his family and friends. RIP, Fred.
