Top citizen award for teenage scout leader Emma

A 17-year-old has been named as the High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Young Citizen of the Year 2022.

Emma Aggrey, of Burscough, topped a list of more than 30 inspiring young people from across the county who have made a real difference in their communitie­s in the last 12 months.

The announceme­nt was made during an award ceremony held on March 23 at Lancashire Police Headquarte­rs, Hutton. The awards were presented by Lancashire Constabula­ry’s DCC Sacha Hatchett, the High Sheriff of Lancashire and Russell Millhouse from the University of Central Lancashire.

Emma, who is a Young Explorer Scout Leader was praised by the judges for her dedication to proposing #ThankYouDa­y to show appreciati­on for unsung Covid heroes.

During lockdown Emma was touched by the sacrifices that many made and helped organise the UK wide ‘Thank You Day’ as a way of giving back. She also delivered online scouting sessions to children online via Zoom and she is also involved nationally in promoting diversity in the field of outdoor activities.

The High Sheriff also presented a bravery award to Bradley Jacobsen, aged 16, from Skelmersda­le, who was recognised after saving the life of a man who was sleeping rough in Liverpool city centre.

Bradley called an ambulance when he realised the man wasn’t breathing and performed life saving CPR on him while following instructio­ns from the 999 operator.

He was also praised for his volunteeri­ng work with his local lost and found pets Facebook page.

Lancashire Constabula­ry’s DCC Sacha Hatchett said: ”I would like to congratula­te this year’s deserving winner Emma and the very worthy runners up. It has been incredible to learn of the achievemen­ts and goodwill of so many young Lancastria­ns and the outstandin­g contributi­ons they have made to their communitie­s.

“It is an honour to be involved in the Young Citizen of the Year Awards and every year we are impressed with the standard of the entries and this year is no different. We have a lot of inspiratio­nal young people in our county and it is a pleasure to recognise them in this way.”

High Sheriff of Lancashire Edwin Booth, said: “The motivation and resolve of young people should never be underestim­ated and is illustrate­d by the actions of our winner and runners up.

“As High Sheriff, I have had the opportunit­y to meet some remarkable young people over the past 12 months and their good example should be an inspiratio­n to all of us”
