Top citizen award for teenage scout leader Emma
A 17-year-old has been named as the High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Young Citizen of the Year 2022.
Emma Aggrey, of Burscough, topped a list of more than 30 inspiring young people from across the county who have made a real difference in their communities in the last 12 months.
The announcement was made during an award ceremony held on March 23 at Lancashire Police Headquarters, Hutton. The awards were presented by Lancashire Constabulary’s DCC Sacha Hatchett, the High Sheriff of Lancashire and Russell Millhouse from the University of Central Lancashire.
Emma, who is a Young Explorer Scout Leader was praised by the judges for her dedication to proposing #ThankYouDay to show appreciation for unsung Covid heroes.
During lockdown Emma was touched by the sacrifices that many made and helped organise the UK wide ‘Thank You Day’ as a way of giving back. She also delivered online scouting sessions to children online via Zoom and she is also involved nationally in promoting diversity in the field of outdoor activities.
The High Sheriff also presented a bravery award to Bradley Jacobsen, aged 16, from Skelmersdale, who was recognised after saving the life of a man who was sleeping rough in Liverpool city centre.
Bradley called an ambulance when he realised the man wasn’t breathing and performed life saving CPR on him while following instructions from the 999 operator.
He was also praised for his volunteering work with his local lost and found pets Facebook page.
Lancashire Constabulary’s DCC Sacha Hatchett said: ”I would like to congratulate this year’s deserving winner Emma and the very worthy runners up. It has been incredible to learn of the achievements and goodwill of so many young Lancastrians and the outstanding contributions they have made to their communities.
“It is an honour to be involved in the Young Citizen of the Year Awards and every year we are impressed with the standard of the entries and this year is no different. We have a lot of inspirational young people in our county and it is a pleasure to recognise them in this way.”
High Sheriff of Lancashire Edwin Booth, said: “The motivation and resolve of young people should never be underestimated and is illustrated by the actions of our winner and runners up.
