Fresh look for pub after £500k refurb

- BY DENISE EVANS

SET on the banks of the Liverpool-Leeds Canal, The Farmers Arms has long been an idyllic spot to stop for a drink and bite to eat.

Now, the results of a major £500k transformation of the Burscough pub have been unveiled, providing a number of fresh features for guests old and new.

They include a Cedar woodclad garden room, which seats up to 60 people, with a glass roof and bifold doors opening up to views of the canal and the West Lancashire countryside beyond.

There is a snug area, a new bar and a dedicated space for customers bringing their dogs along.

The interior design is dominated by natural colours such as olive green, creams and the lighting is contemporary and cool with naked light bulbs and basket-weaved lampshades. Floral textile designs on chairs and bench-style tables have replaced the old furniture and there’s plenty of subtle, personal touches too.

Ali Coxon, the family pub’s manager, has personally designed the light-up table centrepiece ornaments while indoor plants and shrubbery hanging from the ceiling and the exposed brickwork combine with natural light to give it a modern, vibrant look.

The Heineken-owned Star Pubs and Bars pub has also seen the kitchen remodelled and the vast beer garden, which stretches around the exterior of the building, boasts a landscaped garden.

The finest materials have been used for the refit, such as Herringbone parquet and plank style timber flooring and the outside of the pub also has new signage and festoon-style lighting.

The food menu has also had an overhaul, with meals from brunch to evening three course dinners, all cooked using locally-sourced produce and Sunday Lunch is set to be one of the most popular options.

Ali says booking well into the summer have already being taken.

Guests can also expect an updated wine list, along with craft beers, premium lagers and an extensive range of gins while a new lighter larger, Heineken

Silver, is also on tap.

Crosthwaite & Gilpin, which is owned by Chris and Jon Nevin, have come on board to manage the pub just outside of Ormskirk and they also run the Golden Lion in Rainford and the Bay Horse in Worsthorne near Burnley.

Chris said the pub, which reopened on April 12, is ideal for returning customers, with the special menu regularly changing, to make sure “they won’t get the same thing twice”.

He added: “We love the canal side location and that you can see the Pennines in the distance.

“With our experienced manager Ali at the helm, our intention is to offer great food and drink and excellent service in a top-quality, warm and welcoming environment everything you could wish for in a pub with an amazing location and lovely area to both live in and visit. “

The Farmers Arms, which has created 30 new jobs as part of the transformation, is taking bookings now, either online or over the phone.
