Special parkrun commemorates 90 years at town campus
A special parkrun to mark Edge Hill University’s 90 years at its Ormskirk campus drew in a bumper crop of runners - and inspired a spike in personal bests.
For the 423rd time, runners congregated on the University’s grounds at 9am on a Saturday to complete the 5km course at their own pace.
And many donned the university’s colours of purple, gold and green - a nod to the women’s suffrage movement and a commitment to the equality of women that drove the formation of the institution.
Setting off from Sporting Edge, 66 new participants were among the 328-strong throng of runners, joggers and walkers, including students and staff.
And organisers say 49 of those who took part smashed their personal best time on the course - perhaps spurred on by the special 90th birthday cakes that awaited them at the finish line.
Parkrun volunteer Vincent Creamer said: “We owe a debt of gratitude to the university, who have been our generous hosts since Ormskirk parkrun began nearly 10 years ago. They provide excellent facilities with grounds and trails maintained to a very high standard. There is also an excellent coffee shop in the sports centre.”
Dr Susie Marriott, Edge Hill’s senior lecturer in marketing and personal and professional development and a parkrun regular said: “We have a great community around parkrun and would encourage anyone thinking about getting involved to make the jump and do it - it’s a fantastic free way to get outside, do some exercise and socialise all at the same time.
“We have been encouraging staff and students across campus to get involved and we were delighted so many new participants took part in this extra special run.”
