Could you provide a forever home for Cracker or Jack?

-

THE first two months of 2024 have been very busy for our RSPCA centre. We have already rehomed 61 animals and took in 30 cats and eight dogs this year!

We wouldn’t be able to do half of the magic we do without the help of volunteers and donations from the public.

Currently, we have a variety of animals looking for their forever homes. Our current Cat and Dog of the Week are lovely ginger cat Cracker, and our handsome German Shepherd Jack.

Cracker had a rocky start here at the centre after being found abandoned in a box and showing staff that she really wasn’t used to kind human interactions.

After spending a few weeks in foster care, Cracker has really started to come out of her shell and is now being described as “a lap cat” who would make a “fantastic companion” and always follows her foster carers around the house.

Cracker has made such fantastic progress in her foster home and is now ready to find her forever family. She would need to be the only pet in the home and any children would need to be 10+.

Jack is our lovely eight-year-old German Shepherd, who loves his walks and cuddles on the sofa. He loves his time out of the kennel going for walks with staff and volunteers and loves to get his nose to the ground for a good sniff!

Jack is a big foodie, which could be a great way to bond with him. He would need new owners to keep on top of grooming due to his long coat – he is still getting used to this so any grooming should be introduced slowly and with lots of positive reinforcement! He would need to be the only pet in the home but can live with children 10+.

One of the best parts of working in animal rescue is success stories and seeing animals go to their loving forever homes after spending weeks (sometimes months!) in our care.

Brother and sister Amy and Sheldon were two cats that were here at the centre with us for 206 days.

They came to us at around two months old after unfortunately being found under a skip with some other cats. They were in quite a poor state, but were nursed back to health by our animal care and veterinary staff, and eventually adopted out.

They took quite a while to be rehomed and even spent some time in a foster home getting them used to day to day life out of the cattery, but their new family are in love with them and they are settling in really well.

Speaking of fostering, we have recently hired a foster co-ordinator.

They are going to be working with the public to let you know all about what fostering is, why it is important, and helping you find the perfect fostering match.

Fostering involves temporarily housing one of our animals in your home, giving it one-on-one care, attention and socialisation. This could be for as little as a few weeks, to occasionally more than a year.

The animals that we put up for foster include kittens that need handrearing, pregnant cats that need somewhere quiet to give birth, puppies that will be long-stays in the centre and would do better growing up in a home, as well as cats that need more time with humans to get them to come out of their shells and learn to trust again.

It is of no cost to yourself as we supply anything needed and invite them back to the centre for veterinary treatments. You just need to be emotionally strong enough to say goodbye at the end of the placement.

Another way that you can help out the centre is by becoming a volunteer. This involves you giving a few hours of your day, whenever you can, to help the animal care staff around the centre.

This could involve cleaning the cattery or kennels on a morning, making food for our residents, socialising cats, or talking dogs for a walk or to the grooming room for a bath!

Our RSPCA centre is committed to the welfare of all animals in our care. The process of rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming animals is a challenging yet rewarding one.

We are always grateful for the support of our community and look forward to continuing our work with your help.
