Bad drivers face crackdown
Nuisance drivers clogging up car parks are to be targeted if a new initiative gets the go-ahead.
Following feedback from residents in East Renfrewshire, councillors have recommended that new rules are put in place.
It means issues such as parking outwith bays could be dealt with more effectively by issuing penalty charges.
The parking of mobile homes, carrying out vehicle repairs within council-owned car parks or any other nuisance are also covered in the new regulations.
As part of the consultation, the council also asked residents about introducing charges for some car parks.
However, following feedback these plans will not be taken forward.
Council leader Jim Fletcher said:“We are a listening council and received strong feedback that the proposed parking charges tariffs in our car parks needed to be considered further.
“One of the main points raised was the potential issue of commuter cars which may be displaced to other residential streets if charges are introduced.
“Therefore, we have recommended to council that we impose more stringent controls on all our car parks.
“Our officers will now consider alternative options which will help to increase the turnover of spaces within our town centres.
“Any alternative options brought forward in future would, of course, be subject to public consultation.”
Councillor Tony Buchanan, convener for infrastructure and growth, added that it remains the case that East Renfrewshire is one of the few places in the greater Glasgow area which does not charge for off-street parking.
“This means that our car parks are often full with commuters, many from outwith the authority, which makes it difficult for residents to get a space for short visits to our town centres,”he said.
“We will look again at how we can address this issue and come up with options which take account the feedback received.”
The increased car parking regulations were agreed by councillors on East Renfrewshire Council’s cabinet, and the decision will now go before the next full council meeting in February for final approval.
