McGinn is back for second Saints stint

-

On a day where St Mirren had people going in and out the door, perhaps the biggest move yesterday was the shock return of Stephen McGinn.

The 28-year-old midfielder put pen to paper on a deal after negotiating his release from English side Wycombe Wanderers.

A product of the famed St Mirren youth academy, McGinn started his professional career at the club in 2006 before leaving in 2010.

Since then he has played for a number of clubs in England and enjoyed a spell with Dundee in 2015.

McGinn scored a lot of important goals for the club in his time – and it’s now hoped his guile can unlock Championship defences.

In October 2008, he scored a vital goal against Rangers as St Mirren won 1–0 – the team’s first home league win over Rangers in 22 years.

Speaking right after the move was made official, gaffer Jack Ross said: “I’ve been speaking with Stephen for a week and a half and knew he was keen.

“He drove up in the middle of the night on Wednesday and still trained yesterda, which shows the type of person he is.

“I played with him here and it seems like a long time ago because he was a young boy. So I know all about his qualities and what he brings to the table.

“I’m surprised we were able to get him. It’s a real coup for us.

“But he’s a St Mirren product and understands what the club is all about and what we need from him.

“Everyone thinks we have a lot of midfielders. But we lost Kyle yesterday, Magennis is young and won’t play every game, and Rocco Quinn is still working out injury issues. I’m delighted with this signing.”
