Designers reveal route for Renfrew crossing
A bridge linking Renfrew to Yoker is a step closer after a location was chosen.
Designers say the preferred route would span the River Clyde from a road new Renfrew Golf Club.
They want to build a carriageway linking Inchinnan Road to the waterside, linking up with Dock Street on the opposite side.
Bosses behind the City Deal – which is bankrolling the £80 million project – also unveiled plans for an upgraded cycle network.
Renfrewshire Council says infrastructure investment will benefit the economy and bring more life to areas around the docks and nearby Glasgow Airport.
A spokesman said: “Preferred routes are currently being finalised.
“The Clyde Waterfront and Renfrew Riverside project includes plans to construct an opening bridge.
“It also includes the construction of the Renfrew North development road and new bike routes.
“Proposals at the airport include the realignment of Abbotsinch Road, construction of a new bridge over the White Cart and new cycle routes between the Westway, Inchinnan and terminal’s business parks.”
The local authority makes up the City Deal group, alongside councils in Glasgow, East Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, West Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire.
It says planners selected the route over others at Ferry Road and near Meadowside Street after feedback from the public.
They insist this will protect roads from traffic surges and make it easier to cross.
The final path for the bridge is still being developed, with talks ongoing with landowners.
Near Glasgow Airport, work will get underway to create new bike routes, connecting to the wider network.
Paisley will be linked to the jet hub, on to Inchinnan, Renfrew and over the new bridge.
The council has vowed to give the public another chance to wade in on the projects in June.
A spokesman added: “Route development work has been informed by the views expressed by the public at highly successful consultation events last May and December and by detailed surveys and consultation with landowners and businesses.
“Consultation has demonstrated overwhelming support for both projects and further public consultation events give another opportunity to have a say on the projects before they are finalised and planning applications lodged.”
