Beauty queen is at the cutting edge for charity

Kind Stephanie’s hair to be turned into wigs for sick kids

A pageant queen is going for the chop for charity, donating her beautiful long locks to a trust that makes wigs for sick children.

Stephanie Bain will be sporting a new look at her next beauty competition, after she cuts around 12 inches from her impressive 32 inch long hair.

The kindhearted 22- year- old will donate the locks to The Little Princess Trust, a charity which gives free real hair wigs to kids who suffer hair loss, or have no hair due to cancer treatment.

Having started growing her hair in high school, Stephanie, who works for Renfrewshire Council, has always had long, thick hair.

So taking the chop, she says, will push her out of her comfort zone.

She explained: “It’s definitely a big change for me, since school the length of my hair has went right down to below my waist.

“I was at a pageant at the weekend and caught a glimpse of my long straight hair in the mirror and suddenly just thought, ‘what am I going to do without this?’

“But I’m one of these people who likes to set themself a challenge and it makes it all worthwhile to know my hair will go to someone who needs it.”

Stephanie, who regularly competes in beauty pageants, has been focusing her efforts on organising a fundraiser for charity, at which she will have her hair cut.

The event will take place at 42 New Street, Paisley, with a live DJ, tuck shop, buffet and raffle on on Saturday, April 28.

Proceeds from the fundraiser will be donated to the Make a Wish Foundation, a charity which arranges experiences for children with life-ending illnesses.

Local businesses have shown support for Stephanie’s efforts, donating prizes for the raffle.

St Mirren have given four tickets to any home game and Celtic have offered a tour of Celtic Park for a group of four people.

Stephanie, of Erskine, said: “I’ve had a lot of great support so far from local businesses, friends and family and am encouraging more people to get involved.

“I’ve raised around £300 from sponsor sheets so far but I am hopeful that I will be able to reach around £ 500 by the end of the charity night.”

The charity hair-chop is not the first fundraiser that Stephanie has set her mind to.

The self-confessed adrenaline junkie abseiled off of the Forth Rail Bridge in 2015, raising £ 160 for Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland.

She has also wing- walked for charity – strapping herself to the wing of a plane during flight, raising more than £500 for Help for Heroes.

She claims that this is probably one of the tamer challenges which she has set for herself.

She said: “Although my parents and boyfriend were shocked when I first told them I was cutting my hair, this is probably less extreme compared to things I’ve done in the past.

“I won’t stop setting myself goals – next year I plan on doing a charity charity bungee jump or sky dive.

“I love the adrenaline rush you get from a new challenge, but I must admit, I am looking forward to being on the ground this time around.”

Stephanie’s next beauty competition will be the National Treasure Pageant in GoGlasgow Urban Hotel on Sunday, June 25.

The rules require participants to take part in charity work, which inspired her to show support for the Little Princess Trust and Make a Wish Foundation.

She hopes her new hairdo wont affect her chances of being crowned the winner.

She explained: “Everyone has been asking me if I’m worried that not having my long hair will affect my opportunity to compete, but I dont think it will - the pageants I take part in aren’t all about looks, it’s more about natural beauty and being a good person on the inside.

“Hopefully I can set a bit of an example and show girls that your appearance doesn’t matter. Doing good and positive things in your life is what’s really important.”
