Danger drivers ignore pupils, saysTom

A lollipop man has slammed danger drivers ignoring children crossing to school.

Tom Chalmers says lives are being put at risk by those ignoring signals to stop and speeding by playground gates.

He has called for fresh traffic calming measures near Bushes Primary after revealing motorists have narrowly missed pupils heading to lessons.

Tom told the Paisley Daily Express: “Traffic was slowing to a halt and, while there was a break in the flow, I extended my stop sign from the pavement, with kids and parents ready to cross from the other side.

“Two idiots ignored my request to stop and drove through – it is an offence not to stop.

“All that was needed was one really inexperienced youngster to step out and they would have been seriously injured or killed.”

Tom, who lives minutes from the school, has called for a summit with councillors and roads chiefs to appeal for extra help.

He told how he was left “seething and raging with anger” after drivers bombed along the road near the Grampian Avenue campus.

Renfrewshire Council says lollipop men and women perform important roles and should be heeded by road users.

A spokesman told the Paisley Daily Express: “Any motorist ignoring a request to stop is breaking the law and endangering the safety of the pupils and the school crossing patroller.”

He added: “Road safety markings are in place for the protection of patroller and pupils at Bushes Primary and we will make Police Scotland aware of the concerns raised regarding motorists in the area.
