Rallying round to help little Layla
Shoppers and stores are working together
The business community and generous shoppers have joined forces to back a fundraising campaign for a sick little girl.
Two-year-old Layla Greene, from Renfrew, has been diagnosed with a rare type of cancer.
She has a stage four neuroblastoma, with tumours in her kidney, liver, brain and back.
Sprinkles ice cream shop, in her home town’s Inchinnan Road, hosted a special #TeamLayla day on Friday with backing from the community.
Special #TeamLayla T-shirts were sold along with slices of a special cake, and donations from the sale of tea, coffee and ice cream went to the fund.
The nearby Nineteen Canteen deli chipped in with a donation of breakfast rolls, around 60 raffle prizes were up for grabs and customers threw spare change into collection buckets.
Sprinkles’ boss Christine Clocherty, who grew up with Layla’s mum Louise Cunningham in Kirklandneuk, said: “The day was really, really good. We easily had 500 people in throughout the day. In fact, as soon as we opened the door people came in.”
Christine thinks she and her team have raised around £1,000 for Layla’s family, which includes dad David, 30.
She added: “I would like to thank my generous customers and my staff who worked for free – some of them even came in on their days off.
Thanks also go to the Wellbread Bakery in High Street for handing in cakes; Kicking Bear Creations for some custom- made dream catchers; Gavin Newlands MP for donating House of Commons chocolates and a teddy bear; Porrelli’s ice cream in Paisley and Booker cash and carry for its crisps donation.
Louise, 31, previously revealed in the Express that Layla was diagnosed just days after doctors told her she had a viral infection.
The youngster has stage four neuroblastoma - a type of cancer which is found in less than 100 children across the UK each year.
She now faces gruelling chemotherapy treatment, blood transfusions, radiotherapy and possibly a bone marrow transplant.
Justin Beiber fan Layla - who has older brothers, Matthew, 11, and nine-year-old Robert - has had £1,300 raised in her name already through a #teamlayla crowd funding effort.
