Morgan’s injury is a total blow

Saints ace Stevie: We’re all hoping for the best

Stevie Mallan concedes that Lewis Morgan’s absence will be a massive blow to the Buddies if the winger is out for some time.

Mallan rushed to Morgan’s side after he went down injured during Saturday’s win over Ayr United.

Morgan was eventually stretchered off to be replaced by John Sutton, with fears that he may have fractured a bone in his ankle.

Hospital scans later revealed there was no break but the winger still faces a spell on the sidelines.

Mallan admitted that if he was to be ruled out for some time then it would take some replacing, considering Morgan’s recent form in the black and white stripe.

He told Express Sport : “I heard the screams and it looked similar to what I had done a few years ago when I went in for a 50/50.

“I ended up having to get an operation and was out for six months.

“As soon as I heard the screams and saw it, then I thought the worst.

“It doesn’t look too good just now but hopefully it’s just a scare instead of anything serious.

“If it is serious, then it is a big loss.

“Lewis is an out- ball that we need and maybe the only proper winger we have in the squad.

“He gets the ball wide and into the box so we need him.

“But we just need to hope for the best.

“It was nothing dirty, it was just a hard challenge.”

Mallan had opened the scoring for the Saints at the weekend, setting them on their way to a crucial 6-2 victory which could go a long way to saving their skin at the bottom of the league.

The midfielder had the opportunity to double his tally with the afternoon after jinking clear of two markers with the score at 2-0.

A flash of skill set him free of the Ayr defence but he was unable to find the target.

But Mallan insists it wasn’t his fault that he missed – but the moaning of teammate Rory Loy.

He added: “I kept hearing screams from Rory, he was dying for a goal.

“He put me off a little bit because I thought it was going to hit the back of the net.

“Sadly it never, so I suppose you could say it was his fault.”
