Paisley’s brand new opera company is to perform in Glasgow

Opera Bamba was founded last year by student Mathew Oliver and since then has staged a concert of performances of the repertoire’s great works in the town.

And the plans are to put on a fully- staged version of Donizetti’s tuneful comedy L’Elisir d’amore.

This weekend, however, the company is heading to Glasgow to present a concert of arias from the great composers’ works.

It will be held at Renfield St Stephen’s Church on Saturday.

Mathew said: “We wanted to try something outside of Paisley.

“Renfield St Stephen’s holds about 200,but we will be happy if we get about 30 on the night.”

Dubbed Spring Opera Gala, the event is described as a “concert where the singers take over”.

All of the glitz and glamour associated with prima divas is promised.

This will be combined with a stunning array of show-stopping music, all chosen by the stars of the show.

People can look forwards to a great evening of entertainment and an opportunity to see Opera Bamba in full swing.

Mathew added: “People will have to turn up on the night to find out what’s on the programme.

“The singers are all fantastic They are studying at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.”

They include Andrew Powis and Guoda Indriunaite.

Later in the year, Opera Bamba is to take a further step in establishing itself as a force to be reckoned with in a concert called Devotion, Deception and Daring.

Up- and- coming director Tim Edmundson will direct a concert of full-blown operatic scenes in Paisley.

Promised is “some of the best talent that Scotland has to offer”.

Included will be extracts from operas by Puccini, Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi and Bizet, with the intention of highlighting “some of the very best music in opera in a manner that will excite both opera novices and enthusiasts alike”.

The venue for the event has still to be confirmed.

“It depends on money,” Mathew said.

This weekend’s concert will be held on Saturday, April 8, at 7.15pm. Tickets are £10 (concession £8). Daring, Deception & Devotion will be held on Thursday, June 22, and Saturday, June 24.

The time has still to be announced.
