Funeral directors’ appeal brings in a mountain of eggs
Around 1,200 Easter eggs are being distributed to needy families after an eggs- traordinary appeal by a local funeral director.
Steven Cameron organised the collection and generous parents and children from Lochfield, West and St Charles’ primary schools all rose to the challenge.
He also received donations from local residents and a fantastic 200 eggs from Anchor Bowling Club.
All the sweet treats were stored at the funeral directors on Caplethill Road, Paisley, but have now been distributed between Renfrewshire Foodbank, Women’s Aid and Families First.
Steven said: “The appeal went very well. I think we must have collected between 900 and 1,200 eggs in the end.
“The three schools were all very generous. They were fantastic. We also got a lot of donations from the public, with people dropping in with eggs, which was great.”
Pat Hollywood, past president of Anchor Bowling Club, said they’d collected 212 eggs from generous members.
He said: “We’ve been doing an appeal for the last couple of years with the Co-operative Funeralcare but they weren’t sure they were running it again this year.
“We heard about Steven’s appeal and put it to the committee and we agreed to support it.
“Some members brought in eggs and others gave money, so we went to various supermarkets to buy them.
“My partner Margaret Hunter was in charge of counting them, so that’s how I know we had 212.
“It’s not down to me, it’s down to the members of the club. Without them we couldn’t do it.”
Steven was delighted his first year was such a success and is determined to do it again next year.
“This is something I want to do every year now,” he said.
“Hopefully, we can get even more schools involved next year and can give more eggs to people who really need them.”
