Pupils’ future is clearly bright
Paisley pupils are seeing their future more clearly after receiving a careers talk from opticians.
Youngsters at Paisley Grammar enjoyed a visit from local opticians to tell them about pursuing a career as an optometrist.
Staff from Specsavers in Paisley introduced the S4 to S6 students to the various different routes into optometry, including taking an undergraduate degree course at Glasgow Caledonian University or enrolling on a Specsavers Optical Apprenticeship.
Those that complete the one-year programme become qualified optical assistants with the chance of full-time employment at Specsavers.
The course also opens up further studying opportunities to successful apprentices, with the potential to qualify as a dispensing optician within five years.
Mitchell Fairley, optometrist at Specsavers in Paisley hopes that the talks gave youngsters a clear perspective.
He said:“It was a pleasure to meet the pupils and to tell them more about the industry and what life is like working at Specsavers.
“I hope Paisley Grammar pupils found the talk useful in helping them to consider their future.
“It would be fantastic to see some of them embark on an optical career once they leave school.”
Janice Levens, head teacher at Paisley Grammar said industry talks are the best way to introduce youngsters to considering a career.
She explained:“There’s no better way to help prepare our pupils for the world of work than by having a variety of experts, like the team at Specsavers, speak directly to them.
“The team delivered a very insightful talk and were on hand to answer any questions from our pupils.
“We’d like to thank them for volunteering their time to visit the school.”
