Terrified wife had to flee violent husband
Assault lands man in court
A couple split up and are planning to get divorced after a violent outburst at home wrecked their relationship.
A Sheriff has now ordered Kevin Cairns, 30, to carry out unpaid work in the community as part of a Community Payback Order.
This came after he admitted committing assault at the home he formerly shared with his wife Samantha in Vennacher Road, Renfrew, in December 2015.
Paisley Sheriff Court heard how angry words had been exchanged between the pair and Cairns suddenly pushed Samantha, causing her to fall to the floor.
When she got up, he pushed her again and – as she lay on the ground a second time – he bent over her and stopped her from getting back on her feet.
She eventually managed to flee to a friend’s house for help and, when she realised her wrist had been injured, she went to Paisley’s Royal Alexandra Hospital.
An X- ray showed she had torn ligaments.
In court, Cairns, of Banchor y Avenue, Inchinnan, admitted committing the assault w h i l e b e hav i n g a threatening or abusive manner likely to cause fear and alarm by acting aggressively.
He also admitted that in August last year, he repeatedly phoned Samanatha, knowing the calls were unwanted.
Defence agent Charlie McCusker said the relationship had been strained, then broke down and was now at an end.
Cairns, he said, had acted out of frustration and his conduct was out of character.
Mr McCusker said he is now in a new relationship and hopes to be able to put the incident behind him.
Sheriff Craig Harris told Cairns: “This must have been a quite terrifying incident and I can well imagine the distress it caused, especially since ligament damage was caused to the victim’s wrist.”
He made Cairns the subject of a 12 month Community Payback Order requiring him to complete 70 hours of unpaid work. A review has been scheduled for July 4.
