Students are good eggs

-

For the third year running, West College Scotland held an Easter egg collection for Renfrewshire Women’s Aid.

With the generous staff and students from across the campuses in Clydebank, Greenock and Paisley donating a whopping 297 chocolate eggs, the children supported by the charity were given an “egg-cellent” Easter.

Being such a large institute, there is always some form of charity work taking place.

However, this particular project always receives a large amount of support and we would like to thank everyone who donated eggs.

The staff and students did an incredible job, resulting in our biggest collection yet.

Caringcommunity

I welcome the proposals to investigate the care packages of many residing in Renfrewshire.

As a carer of two sons who have required support all through their lives – and now also supporting someone with dementia – I am aware of the day-to-day issues that both carers and people with disabilities face.

I am privileged to know many carers who fit their own needs around caring.

One thing that comes up, over and over again, is decreasing choice, be it in where people live and the services that allow them to be more independent.

There is also a shortage of available respite, which gives many a well needed break.

There are many issues impacting on carers.

One of these is self-directed support, which allows people to buy in services.

This has been accompanied by cuts in services which many rely on.

I look forward to the audit but also encourage those who represent carers to sit down and have a conversation with us – a carers blether.

Carers are the backbone of our society – decent hard-working folk who deserve to be listened to.

I hope the Renfrewshire election candidates do take the opportunity to talk to carers after the election and help make our lives easier and acknowledge how important a carer’s role is.

I also want to acknowledge Renfrewshire Carers Centre and other charities who make life easier for many.

Their service should be seen as part of services provided. Sandra Webster Renfrewshire Branch Scottish Socialist Party
