We won’t be rushed over new coach

-

Braehead Clan look set to take their time to appoint a new head coach, according to hockey and operations director Gareth Chalmers.

Chalmers insists that the club will run the rule over a number of candidates but says he understands the importance of appointing the right man to succeed outgoing boss Ryan Finnerty.

Chalmers said:“Realistically, we’re hoping to get someone in place in the next two weeks.

“Recruitment is starting to ramp up now and there are perhaps guys we want to hold on to for next season.

“As time ticks on, players are dripping into the market so we need to make sure we get someone in place and get them into building the team and establish their plans for the new season.

“But as I said, that doesn’t mean we’re going to rush into anything because we’ve got a time frame. It’s a very big decision and one we have to get right.

“It’s not going to be a one-year, quick fix appointment. We want to bring in a guy and give them time and support to allow them to achieve the targets we have.

“It’s not one we want to rush. We have to try and take our time with this decision to make sure we get the right individual at the club.”

And Chalmers revealed that a number of candidates have already put their name forward, adding:“There’s been a variety of candidates with different backgrounds and plenty of experience that we’re looking for, so it’s progressing well and it’s all about picking the right person.

“It’s difficult to explain the sort of criteria we’re looking for. Every club would like the ideal head coach, but we’re looking for someone with experience, that has a record of winning.

“We also want someone that can put an entertaining product on the ice. There are various different aspects we have to try and cover to try to find that candidate and compromise in other places.”
