The dream’s not over yet

Ambitious Todd optimistic

- Craig Ritchie

Josh Todd’s journey to the Championship has been a long one, but the St Mirren midfielder insists he isn’t panicking that his dream could already be over.

The Englishman slogged it out in League Two with Annan Athletic before making the bold step by playing as an amateur for Dumbarton at the start of this season in a bid to win a professional deal higher up the leagues.

His performances at The Rock caught the eye of Saints boss Jack Ross in January, who rewarded him with his first full-time deal at this level.

The 22- year- old looked to have salvaged the Saints a point with a late leveller at Tannadice, only for Blair Spittal to run up the other end of the park to fire the winner for Dundee United.

Defeat sent St Mirren back into the relegation play-offs, but Todd reckons there is no reason to get worried.

He told Express Sport: “No-one’s panicking just yet.

“We are still confident of avoiding the drop because, at the end of the day, we have had a fantastic string of results.

“The form that the team managed to pull together has been nothing short of fantastic. One setback isn’t the end of it and we need to keep pushing.

“You can look at the league table, but ultimately there are still two games to go to keep us in the division.

“It is still tight, and results could go all manner of a different ways for the sides involved. It could all change by 5pm on Saturday, or the following week. Nothing is going to be settled until the final whistle.

“You have to take each week as it comes, and if we can take care of our business then we should be where we want to be.”

Todd admitted he had mixed emotions on Saturday having been delighted with the impact he made after coming on as a second-half substitute.

He has so far found first- team opportunities hard to come by, but Todd says that the team has to come first.

He added: “It was a really hard one for all of the boys to take after putting so much into the game all through the 90 minutes.

“They gave their all. I was watching from the sidelines for the most part, but you could see they were putting everything into the game.

“Unfortunately, it all boils down to one shot from outside the box. Luckily for them it goes in and wins them the game but it’s a gutter for us.

“We can take the positives from the game because there was obviously a lot of work rate and desire and we thought we should have won.

“We are disappointed, but we can’t dwell on it, we need to move on to next week because there is no time to think about it.

“It was a delight for me to score my first goal for the club, but at the same time it’s a team game.

“Overall it wasn’t the greatest day for the side, but of course I was happy at the time to hit my first goal.”
