SNP candidate for Paisley and Renfrewshire North Gavin Newlands was surrounded by activists, supporters and newly elected councillors, as he launched his campaign for re-election in the Westminster poll.
Mr Newlands says the contest in Scotland will come down to a shootout between the SNP and the Tories, with the Labour Party in disarray.
He said: “This General Election will be a straight contest between the SNP and the Tories.
“For the past two years, the SNP MPs have been the effective opposition at Westminster, holding the Tories to account from Brexit to the Rape Clause, to austerity and their vicious cuts to welfare.
“The Labour Party is in complete disarray, preferring to fight with one another rather than opposing the Tories.
“Due to Labour’s incompetence, the Tories are expected to strengthen their majority and, as such, it’s vitally important that we have strong Scottish voices at Westminster opposing the Tories’ right-wing divisive agenda.”
He says he will continue to promote the interests of the people of Renfrewshire if elected next month.
He added: “It’s been a great honour to represent Paisley and Renfrewshire North in the UK Parliament.
“I have ensured that Renfrewshire’s voice has been heard in Westminster like never before and have also been able to help thousands of local people with a wide range of issues.
“The SNP will always stand up for Scotland and I will always stand up for the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire.
“I want to continue my work representing the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire North.
“A vote for the SNP is to have a strong and effective opposition to the Tories.”
The General Election will take place on June 8.
Due to Labour’s incompetence, the Tories are expected to strengthen their majority. We will be a strong opposition to their right-wing, divisive agenda
