DUO ARE JAILED AFTER GRANDFATHER’S ORDEAL Bus thugs are caged

- David Campbell

Two thugs have been jailed after a grandfather was battered on a Paisley bus.

Pensioner James Brain, 65, was left bloodied and bruised after confronting yob Calum Andrew for holding up his journey.

The cowardly duo struck when Mr Brain tried to intervene in an argument with the bus driver.

At Paisley Sheriff Court yesterday 46-year-old Andrew admitted assaulting Mr Brain and was jailed for six months.

John Andrew, 51, was also jailed after he pled guilty to hurling abuse at the bus driver during the rammy.

Mr Brain was simply trying to get home when the thug, of Foxbar Crescent, struck.

Fiscal depute Joanne Gilmour said: “It was around 7.50pm. The incident took place on a bus.

“The driver was forced to perform an emergency stop after a child stepped out onto the roadway.

“The emergency stop

propelled passengers forward, but no one was knocked from their feet.

“John Andrew went to the front of the bus and began leaning into the driver’s compartment, and was remonstrating with the driver about the emergency stop.

“He then left the bus. The bus continued on its journey, the only people on the bus at this time were James Brain, Calum Andrew and Lisa Andrew.

“The bus then stopped and the accused and Lisa Andrew walked to the front of the bus.

“The accused was standing at the door and Lisa Andrew engaged the driver regarding the emergency stop.

“Due to the length of time this was taking, James Brain shouted, ‘I want to get off the bus, I wanna go home.’

“Calum got back on the bus and walked towards Mr Brain.

“James Brain stood up and walked towards the accused.

“Calum lifted his arm. Mr Brain is also seen to lift his arm, and a struggle then took place.

“James Brain was punched on the head to his injury.

“Mr Brain was taken to hospital where four stitches were placed into a laceration above his right eye.”

Andrew’s defence agent said that the incident was a two-sided affair, describing it as more of a fight. He said: “If the police had arrived at the time of the incident there might have been more than one person would have been getting arrested.

“CCTV footage shows the complainer standing at the door, ‘seeing him off’ as it were. “He is no shrinking violet.” Sheriff David Pender jailed the Andrews for six months each for their part in the incident on March 8 last year ,

He described John Andrew’s record as “terrible”.

He added: “Calum Andrew, there was absolutely no need for you to get back on the bus.” (Adjacent to Kwik Save car park, Paisley Road West)
