MSP calls on young people to turn out to vote

-

Politician Mary Fee is calling on younger voters to turn up to the polls on Thursday to vote in the General Election.

In the last week, the polls have narrowed, with a recent YouGov p o l l putting Labour on 39 per cent of the vote, only three per cent behind the Conservatives.

Younger voters may have a decisive impact on the outcome of this election if they turn out to vote in significant numbers, as they did at the EU referendum in 2016 and the Scottish Independence referendum in 2014.

In the month following the announcement of the snap General Election, around one million young people registered to vote.

However, despite this sizable uptake in voter registration among young people, a recent ICM poll has highlighted that only 44 per cent of 18 to 24 year olds said they were certain to vote on Thursday.

This compares with 66 per cent of the 35 to 64 age group and more than 80 per cent of over-65s.

Last week, an Ipsos Mori poll revealed that support for the Scottish Labour party has increased five per cent from the share of the vote they received in May’s local government elections.

Mrs Fee, who is a Scottish Labour MSP for the West of Scotland, said: “The polls have highlighted that this election is neck- andneck.

“Young voters have the power to shape the outcome of this election.

“I was pleased to read that in the month following the announcement of the snap election, around one million young people across the UK had registered to vote.

“It is now vitally important that young voters now use that power and vote at the general election this Thursday.

“It is clear that Labour’s manifesto is resonating with voters across the country.

“We are the party of the many, not the few.

“Our proposals are fully costed, popular with voters and will transform Britain for the better.

“Kezia Dugdale and Jeremy Corbyn have both been unequivocal in their opposition to independence.

“No ifs, no buts, no maybes.

“Labour will oppose indyref 2.

“Ultimately, the choice at this election comes down to electing either an increasingly right- wing Tory government or a transformative and modern Labour government.

“If you want a Labour Government, you have to go to your local polling station this Thursday and vote Labour.”
