Officers launch probe after primary school is torched

- Alison Rennie

Police are looking for three 13-year- old teenagers after a primary school was set on fire on Sunday night.

Residents living close to Bargarran Primary in Erskine reported seeing smoke coming from the building just before 10pm on Sunday.

Police are treating the incident as wilful fireraising and are keen to speak to anyone who saw anything suspicious at the school.

DC Colin Leggat told the Paisley Daily Express: “We want to speak to any witnesses to the incident. In particular, we are keen to speak to three male youths, aged about 13, who were seen in the school grounds shortly before the fire started.”

Several windows were smashed due to the ferocious heat of the blaze and part of the building has been damaged.

The school is currently closed for the summer holidays and council officials say they’re working with the police and fire service to assess the damage caused to the building ahead of pupils’ return on Tuesday, August 15.

A spokesperson said: “The fire service responded to a call relating to a fire at Bargarran Primary School on Sunday, July 23. The police are currently investigating the incident.

“We appreciate that parents and pupils will be concerned about the damage to the school. We are working with the police and fire service to assess the damage and will update parents when we have more information.”

Bargarran Primary is due to move to a new £14 million shared joint campus with St John Bosco Primary in Erskine.

Work started in March this year on the state-of-the-art facility which is expected to open in 2018.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “At 10pm on Sunday, July 23, Police Scotland officers attended at Bargarran Primary School in Erskine following a report of a fire at the school building.

“The fire was extinguished however the building has been damaged and enquiries are continuing.”

Anyone with any information to pass to the police can ring them on the nonemergency number 101.
