We’re focused on Championship

Fitzy praises fans for their loyal support

Tony Fitzpatrick insists St Mirren must now focus on the Championship after watching them crash out of the League Cup at the weekend.

The Saints chief executive conceded that the club’s League Cup campaign hasn’t gone as well as supporters would have liked.

However, he is keen to focus on the upcoming league season as the side look to put the disappointment of Saturday’s drubbing behind them.

Rumours of potential new signings continue to swi r l around Greenhill Road, with defender Harry Davis expected to return while Hearts full back Liam Smith has also been linked with the club.

And Fitzpatrick admits the hard work continues behind the scenes ahead of the big kick- off against Falkirk on Saturday, August 5.

He told Express Sport: “It is still very much a work in progress right now, but everything has been geared towards the league season getting started.

“Of course, we would have loved a run in the cup, but the bigger picture has always been the Championship season and what we can do there.

“We wanted to qualify from the group but we have put our all into getting off to a good start.

“As it stands we are still looking at ways that we can strengthen the side and help Jack build, we are always doing that and will continue to do so.

“We are looking at a few players that could potentially come in and we are continuing to put in the hours to help in that regard.”

A 5- 0 defeat at the hands of Partick Thistle at the weekend put any dreams of St Mirren progressing through to the next round on the back burner for another League Cup campaign.

The Buddies have failed to progress from the group stages ever since the tournament was revamped, crashing out on goal difference last time around.

But despite their indifferent start to the competitive matches, there continues to be an air of positivity around the club, and Fitzpatrick was quick to thank the fans for their continued support.

He added: “The backing we have had from the support since the end of last season has been brilliant and they have shown that again with the way they have came out and bought season tickets in their numbers.

“We understand the frustration that comes with a result like Saturday’s, but even then the supporters stayed behind to show their support.”
