Foul-mouthed thug dragged out of store

Accused threw shop items at cops

- Chris Taylor

A yob had to be dragged out of a supermarket after he began launching objects at police.

Graham O’Neil, 40, began bawling at officers and hurling his possessions after the turned up at an Asda store.

He lost the plot after being told he would be reported by cops for a separate matter and had to be cuffed and carried outside.

The thug admitted acting in a threatening or abusive manner during a foul-mouthed rant at Paisley Sheriff Court.

Prosecutor Maureen McGovern told how O’Neil had to be forced to the floor and restrained after he kicked-off.

She said: “He reentered the store and was pointed out by shop staff.

“Police told him he would be reported to the procurator fiscal in relation to another matter.

“On being told this, the accused became aggressive towards officers and started throwing objects and began shouting and swearing.

“His behaviour was such, he was immediately informed he was being arrested.

“He began to swing his arms at police officers in an attempt to free himself of their grip.

“He was lowered into the prone position and was eventually handcuffed.”

O’Neil – who has a history of outbursts – claimed drugs were behind the ordeal at the shop in Church Road, Barrhead, on March 22. Defence lawyer Peter Galletly claims his client has kicked his habit and is trying to turn his life around.

He said: “There’s been a significant change in his character.

“He turned 40 recently and has taken the view that it is time for him to take stock and stop getting himself into situations like this.

“He’s not felt like this for a number of years.”

Sheriff Colin Pettigrew warned O’Neil still had to be convinced by his claims and ordered him to carry out community service.

He said: “If I look at your record, these things are happening far too often.

“You had two public order offences and here is a third.”

O’Neil, of nearby Kerr Street, was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work within four months.
