Free gig boost for city of culture bid at mall

Top musicians in shopping centre’s fantastic line-up

31.08.2017 Braehead is hitting the right notes with a special carnival in support of Paisley’s City of Culture bid.

Live performanc­es will turn the mall into an all-singing, all-dancing festival without the rain.

Shoppers will be treated to sets from a bill of top musicians and troupes at the free event.

Jean Cameron, director of the nationwide competitio­n, says the best talent from across the region will be given a stage to shine.

She said: “Creating showcases for our brilliant local talent is at the heart of Paisley’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021.

“Teaming up with intu Braehead for the Paisley 2021 day offers a fantastic opportunit­y for some of the amazing musical and artistic performers.

“Acts will come from across Renfrewshi­re to perform in front of thousands of visitors to the shopping centre.”

The gig will also include a Paisley Music Week Showcase, in collaborat­ion with L’n’P Promotions, with a number of musicians performing during the afternoon.

Singing duo Mandulu and Hephzibah, singer-songwriter Matthew Gibb and Paisley band Clyde will entertain visitors.

They will be joined by the awardwinni­ng Street Stuff youth scheme, community dance group Right2Danc­e and the Johnstone Phoenix Theatre Group.

Abhinaya Glasgow Dance Academy will also be on hand for a Bollywood Dancersize instructio­n.

Gary Turnbull, intu Braehead general manager, says the shopping centre is behind efforts to bring home the title.

He said: “We are delighted to support the Paisley bid by hosting such a fantastic event at intu Braehead.

“Local musicians and performers will have an opportunit­y to demonstrat­e the talent that Paisley is renowned for.”

Paisley faces off against English cities Coventry, Sunderland, Swansea and Stoke-on-Trent for the prestigiou­s title.

The winner is expected to be announced by the end of the year.All the fun at Braehead starts from 1pm on Friday.
