Foodbank delighted with amazing response

- David Campbell

Big- hearted Saints fans raided the larder to help nearly 2,000 hard- up families.

Renfrewshire Foodbank held a collection before St Mirren’s league win over Dundee United last weekend and secured a bumper haul from generous buddies.

The foodbank took in 834.7kg in vital supplies, which translates into 1,987 meals for needy families across the region.

Generous players and staff from the Paisley club chipped in with 82.7kg of donations for the lifeline charity and organisers were delighted with how the fans responded to the appeal.

Jim Crawford, a volunteer from Renfrewshire Foodbank, said: “We can’t thank everyone who donated at the game enough.

“The collection will help nearly 2,000 people, which is great news.

“Fans and people coming from the surrounding area were very generous with their donations.

“And so were some Dundee United supporters who brought items along to donate.

“I want to thank St Mirren again for their ongoing support.

“We have staged a number of collections at the ground over the last few seasons and each time the club, its players and officials, get right behind us.”

St Mirren chief executive Tony Fitzpatrick was happy with the way fans responded to the appeal.

He added: “We supported it 100 per cent and we will continue to support the foodbank in any way we can in the future.”

Renfrewshire Foodbank is currently running very low on the following items: tinned soup, tinned fruit, Long-life juice, UHT milk, cereal, tinned tomatoes, jam and teabags/coffee.

Trussell Trust Foodbanks provide three days of emergency food to local individuals and families in crisis.

Frontline care professionals, including health visitors, social workers and school liaison officers, can refer people who are facing hunger to the foodbank.

To get help, you need to have a valid foodbank voucher and there are four distribution centres across Renfrewhire.

These are in Paisley, at the Central Baptist Church,14 Lady Lane; Renfrew, at Renfrew Baptist Church,77 Paisley Road; Johnstone High Parish Church, Quarry Street, Johnstone, and Erskine Baptist Church, Park Hill, Park Mains, Erskine.
