Cameron earns top trophy with stunning display

Victory for young golfer

- Craig Ritchie

Cameron Percy clinched the Renfrewshire Boys Match Play Championship with a stunning display at the weekend.

The competition was played at Kilmacolm Golf Club on Sunday.

The Freedman Trophy was presented to the club in 1979, with the silverware having been originally brought from Canada.

The weather on the day was very mixed with showers during the day but never enough to disrupt play.

The semi-finals were played in the morning with the results as follows: Cameron Percy (Caldwell) beat Euan McNeill (Lochwinnoch), Patrick McCartney (Greenock) beat Kenan Ingram (Port Glasgow).

In the first semi-final Euan McNeill, the leading qualifier, was never down until his opponent made birdie at the 19th.

And in the other semi-final Patrick McCartney played some solid golf, but his win was helped by a few wayward drives out to the right by Kenan Ingram.

The prospect of a great final was always on the cards with Percy trying to go one better than his big brother last year when Stewart lost in the final, with both players evenly matched.

First blood went to Percy with a lost ball at the fourth by McCartney, and a one hole lead was secured.

McCartney then hit back and won the sixth with a par, however at the seventh Percy made par to go one up and held this lead to the turn with all previous holes shared in par.

Both went on to make bogey at 10 and shared the par five 11th with another par.

With McCartney missing the green at the 12th, Percy rolled in a lovely birdie putt through some casual water to go two up.

Both missed putts for par at the 13th hole, and with both coming up short at the 14th, McCartney pitched close and won the hole with par.

The next hole was to prove crucial, with both hitting the green, but with Percy holing out while from inside him, McCartney missed to go two down.

The 16th saw the end to the game, when McCartney, with the wrong choice of club and a following wind, overshot the green to lose his ball, while his opponent also overshot but was able to find his ball and with a safe chip to claim victory.

An RGU spokesman said: “The game was played in the best of spirits as you would expect from RGU Boys. It was just a pity in such a great game that someone had to lose.

“Both boys are available for the RGU in future events and have been selected as part of a boys three-man team at the Glasgow Youths Championship on Sunday at Ralston Golf Club.”
