Guilty driver stumps up cash

-

An anonymous motorist coughed up £100 in an amazing act of honesty.

The conscientious driver sent the cash to council chiefs after a mystery collision involving a Keep Left sign.

The money – in the shape of 10 crisp tenners – was contained in an envelope along with a cryptic explanation.

Now the cash is to be spent on repair work.

The guilty driver’s generosity came as a pleasant surprise to council bosses who dealt with the incident.

Mr John Young, assistant director of technical services for Renfrew District Council, handled the matter.

And he admitted:“It is highly unusual.”

Mr Young explained that the cash was sent to the council’s offices in Renfrew before being passed on to HQ in Paisley.

He said there was no way of identifying the driver because no signature had been attached to the note.

Details of the letter accompanying the cash were sketchy.

The guilty driver only mentioned that his or her car struck a Keep Left sign and the money had been enclosed for repairs.

The letter did not state where the accident took place of when it happened.

“I presume he or she had had a remorse of conscience and had sent the £100,”Mr Young said.
