Gaffer’s plea to squad

- Craig Ritchie

St Mirren manager Jack Ross has called on his side to “believe”.

The Buddies boss has been delighted with the Saint s’ performances so far this season as they head into today’s clash at Falkirk top of the league.

Goals from Stelios Demetriou, Cammy Smith and Gavin Reilly sealed the points for the Buddies the last time the two sides met on the opening day of the season.

But Ross insists that if his side have any ambitions of competing at the top of the table then they need to continue to believe in themsleves.

Ross said: “We continue to be in a good place as a squad.

“But we need to continue to grow the belief because that’s the one thing I am on to them about all the time, telling them to keep the belief in the squad.

“They need to believe that they are a good team, believe that they are a good squad, and believing in what they do.

“If they do that then they will keep producing good performances and results.

“I think our record over the first quarter is remarkable. I know we finished last season really well but given where we finished in the division, expectations obviously change very quickly.”

Ross has made no secret of his bid to earn promotion with the Buddies this season as he looks to take them back in to the top flight following three seasons in the Scottish Championship.

And he admits that he was delighted to see a rare clean sheet against Dumbarton last weekend having only secured one prior to the game against the Sons.

Ross added: “I have been open about my ambitions and that helps to strengthen those expectations.

“But to do what we have done so far is very, very good because this is a really difficult league and there are some really tough matches.

“Clean sheets are something we haven’t had a lot of.

“But if we can have more of them then it gives us the opportunity to win games because I always feel we will create and score goals. “The fans have also been fantastic. “My gratitude to them has always been consistent.

“The numbers they are travelling in at the moment, the support and the vocal backing that they are providing us is great and I hope they know the players appreciate it.”
