Prayers as Steven fights for his life

-

A St Mirren super-fan is fighting for his life after he was mowed down by a van while he waited to cross the road.

Steven Donaghy, 22, has been placed in an induced coma after he was struck by the Peugeot Partner when it hit a traffic island.

He was rushed into a hospital operating theatre after the crash which happened as he walked to his job as a disability charity support worker.

Medical staff have described his condition as “critical”.

Jacqueline McCusker, 54, mum of Steven’s girlfriend Danielle, 26, has hailed the doctors and nurses for fighting to save him.

She said: “Steven has had

surgery for swelling and a bleed on the brain.

“They are keeping him in the coma for now, so it’s a waiting game at the moment.

“Everybody at the hospital have helped us so much and we can’t thank them enough for all they do.

“They truly are heroes and deserve all the praise in the world.

“Steven is an avid St Mirren fan and just a lovely young man.

“He is fit and healthy, so we are praying all will be good.”

Paisley man Steven is a regular at Saints games.

He was struck as he waited at a pedestrian crossing between Whitlawburn and High Burnside in Cambuslang.

Paramedics took him to nearby Hairmyres Hospital before he was transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for further treatment.

Frantic Danielle also took to social media to give pals an update on his condition.

She said: “He’s out of surgery and a lot more stable.

“The pressure has gone down and his blood pressure is a lot better.

“Thanks for everyone’s concern, it means a lot.”

A woman, 22, who was driving the van was left badly shaken, but uninjured during the horror.

Cops swooped and closed the road for several hours after the accident around 7.45am on Wednesday.

Crash scene investigators combed the site for clues and are scouring CCTV to establish the cause of the smash.

Police Scotland Sergeant Alasdair Marshall said: “I am appealing to anyone who may have been travelling on the A749, in particular motorists, bus drivers and taxi drivers who were on the opposite carriageway.

“If you have any information or any dash cam footage, please do contact us.

“Your information could assist in the ongoing investigation into establishing the circumstances of this incident.”
