Two arrested for house raids after police swoop on car

- David Campbell

Police have scored a major success in their fight against house raiders after arresting two men carrying thousands of pounds worth of goods.

The men, aged 43 and 48, were arrested after officers stopped a vehicle in the Ferguslie Park area of Paisley on Tuesday.

The car was carrying four men and contained a large quantity of what police believe to be items taken during a number of house break- ins across Renfrewshire.

Some of the items recovered are said to be linked to a house raid in Bridge of Weir Road, Brookfield, where nearly £3,000 worth of items including jewellery, laptops, a dashcam and a mantelpiece clock were all allegedly stolen on October 18.

The two men have also been charged with housebreakings in Paisley, Brookfield and a break-in attempt in Elderslie.

Officers are now working to reunite some of the items recovered from the car with their rightful owners, including jewellery and commemorative coins.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, who is based in Paisley, says the force is working overtime to tackle a spate house raids across the area.

She said: “The crime of housebreaking is a despicable act which not only results in economic loss, but also leaves victims feeling vulnerable and insecure in their own homes.

“I am delighted with the detection of the suspects and the recovery of property, some of which has a sentimental value to the owners.

“As a division we are dedicated to detecting offenders and preventing such crimes from occurring.

“I’d like to ask the public to be vigilant regarding home security and to ensure that doors and windows are secure at all times.

“Should members of the public see anyone acting suspiciously within their own property, or that of a neighbour, please let us know immediately by calling 999.”
