Derby dust-ups are highlight of Baird’s year

- St Mirren

The Renfrewshire derby will always hold a special place in Jack Baird’s heart.

The defender struck his first ever goal for St Mirren when playing against their bitter rivals back in 2015 — a moment that he admits he continues to savour.

Baird insists it is the fixture he always looks out for when the list is announced at the start of the season.

He said: “It was a big moment for me as it was my first goal and it was against Morton, which was big for me and the club.

“It was a shame it didn’t end up in a win that day, but I’ve had some decent memories playing against Morton, so I’m hoping to carry that into tomorrow.”

Baird has cemented his spot in the starting XI in recent weeks, forming a formidable partnership with Gregor Buchanan.

His displays have also earned him praise from the Saints support and the 21- year- old revealed he loves hearing his name ringing out from the stands.

He added: “You can’t beat it. It’s what you dream of as a wee kid and I’m really enjoying it.

“The crowd gets better and better every week and it’s unbelievable some of the support we get, considering we’ve been through some tough times.

“We are trying to do our best for them because they have stuck by us through those tough times and it’s nice to reward them with something. They’ve been great with me and very supportive.”
