Flooding misery has gone on long enough

Family says it’s time to fix water issue after 27 years

- Kenneth Speirs

A family is demanding action from council bosses over a flooding problem they say has been causing misery for more than 25 years.

The stretch of street outside the McInally’s home in Johnstone’s Dundonald Avenue gets badly flooded almost every time it rains.

And residents say the water often makes it way up their front paths, making it difficult for people to get in and out.

Speaking on behalf of his parents, Alec McInally, 30, said: “I’ve contacted the council two or three times about it, and they have come up They basically just drain the water away but it doesn’t actually fix the problem.

“They take the water away, then go away, and then in the next day or two, as soon as its rains again, the water’s back again.

“They’re not fixing the actual issue. It has been like this for 27 years.

“Every time it rains, it’s like this.”

This makes life very difficult for family members, Mr McInally added.

“My dad’s got a walking frame and he needs to go across the road for groceries and he sometimes , literally, can’t get out of the house because of it,” he said.

“And when he does need to go to the shop, he has to walk through the puddle itself.

“Basically, when he needs go out he’ll phone me.”

Mr McInally said he has emailed photographs of the problem to Renfrewshire Council in a bid to get action.

He explained: “Two weeks ago, I phoned them and they said they’d come up that day.

“Again, they dealt with it, and then away they go.

“You’d think they would twig there is an issue there.

“I want them to fix the problem, fix the drain.

“They should come out and just do it, it’s been going on for so long.”

A spokesman for Renfrewshire Council said: “We appreciate the frustration felt by residents and are working hard to resolve this historic issue of water which gathers at Dundonald Avenue and Craigview Avenue.

“Following extensive work to unblock drains, replace manhole covers and carry out repairs to nearby water channels, a survey of the roadside drainage completed in November has confirmed

.“there are no blockages.

“We apologise to residents for any inconvenience caused as we continue to investigate this matter.”
